Hedging Your Bets

Hedging Your Bets was a concept for a musical that won the prestigious 4Play competition run by Northumberland Theatre Company, which commissioned me, with musician Foz Foster, to create an original 40minute musical which they then produced and toured around the North East and Scotland.

Hedging Your Bets is a musical of low lives and high drama, set in a betting shop and loosely inspired by Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. Shop manager Karen feels trapped in her job running the local betting shop, as much by the expectations of her regulars as by her private life as a renting single mum. That is, until a handsome stranger arrives to present her with a tempting, but dangerous alternative. The music style is eclectic pop, with songs inspired by artists as diverse as Nick Cave, The Ting Tings and The Divine Comedy.
